Let’s face it: most of us have a problem with clutter.
Whether you have stacks of paper on your desk, an overflowing closet of clothes you don’t wear, or drawers that just hide things that never had a home to begin with, clutter is taking up valuable space in your life.
In my own life, it is holding me back from having the flexible and lean lifestyle needed for travel as well as losing weight (why do I keep all these clothes that don’t fit?).
In your life it could:
- Prevent you from saving money for your big dream (ever buy something twice because you can’t find the original?)
- Hamper your social life
- Rob you of energy and a healthy lifestyle
- Remind you of past disappointments
- Block you from visualizing a new future
Not only is it unattractive, it keeps us from living our best lives.
You often hear the word “clutter” mixed in with talk of organization and cleanliness, and it does play a part. But what we will be focusing on this month is simply getting rid of stuff that isn’t useful, beautiful, or meaningful. Whether you have everything labeled and organized or clean and sparkly is a conversation for another day, and frankly I couldn’t tackle all three things at once.
So, let’s make it easy on ourselves. We’ll start off the month talking about a few decluttering techniques, and then we’ll take each week to focus on a particular area. Along the way we’ll offer up mini-challenges to help you jumpstart the process and see a little success.
Decluttering is as much mental as it is physical, so we will explore ideas on how to prevent clutter, why we keep things we don’t need or want, and the cost of so much extra weight in our lives. We’ll also talk about how to make some money off your decluttering efforts as well as what you will save by having an ongoing strategy of simplification.
Best of all, I’m going to share pictures and video of my own decluttering efforts and you will be able to do the same. (come on, at least you can choose to be anonymous!)
